COBB, BREDESEN, AND KISBER ANNOUNCE CDBG RECOVERY ACT GRANTS FOR MAURY COUNTY
Additional Community Development Block Grants Funded by Federal Stimulus
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – State Representative Ty Cobb (D-Columbia), Governor Phil Bredesen and Economic and Community Development Commissioner Matt Kisber recently approved a $474,000 Community Development Block Grant as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to assist in infrastructure improvements in Maury County.
“Programs like Community Development Block Grants make it possible for communities to strengthen their foundations, preparing them for economic growth they might not otherwise experience,” Cobb said. “We understand the significance of this grant to Maury County, and we are grateful for it.”
The funds will be used to rehabilitate the Mt. Pleasant water system by replacing old water mains and customer water meters and installing pump controls to eliminate storage tank overflows. The project will serve 5,534 residents, of whom 71.7 percent are low to moderate income.
“We are grateful for the additional dollars to enhance the lives of Tennessee citizens and help communities make much needed improvements. Maury County’s infrastructure project will bolster growth and development in the area, and I’m very pleased our state can partner in this vital financial assistance program,” said Bredesen.
Funding for the $600,000 project will include $126,000 in local funds. The grant dollars were provided by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and were allocated under a procedure authorized by the Tennessee General Assembly.
“The Recovery Act CDBG funds will be put to good use in assisting our communities, while creating new jobs and retaining current ones. The building blocks for economic development are simple infrastructure necessities like water systems and road improvements, and CDBG grants help communities meet those basic needs,” said Kisber.
The Recovery Act allocated an additional $1 billion nationwide to the CDBG program for local governments to create suitable living environments, provide decent affordable housing and create economic opportunities, primarily for persons of low and moderate income.
