BREDESEN AND COBB PRESENT ENHANCEMENT GRANT FOR MT. PLEASANT INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS
Grant designed to help enhance local area’s transportation infrastructure
NASHVILLE (Sept. 1) – On Thursday, State Representative Ty Cobb (D-Columbia), Governor Phil Bredesen and Transportation Commissioner Gerald Nicely presented the city of Mt. Pleasant with an enhancement grant of $218,752 to assist with the development of the Mt. Pleasant Community Walkway.
“This grant is an example of the dedication of local government leaders to make meaningful improvements in both large and small communities,” said Cobb. “With the help of Governor Bredesen and Commissioner Nicely, we were able to make this important investment in the Mt. Pleasant community.”
The grant is made possible through a federally funded program administered by the Tennessee Department of Transportation.
The Mt. Pleasant Community Walkway will originate on Gray Lane at the Brookside Drive intersection behind the Mt. Pleasant Shopping Center. The extension of the walkway will continue in a westerly direction on the south side of Gray Lane, and will extend along North Locust Street to Third Avenue and will terminate near Mt. Pleasant High School. When completed, nearly 2,000 students at area schools will be able to walk or bicycle safely to their educational facilities.
“The Mt. Pleasant Community Walkway will provide a much needed link between schools, residential areas, and commercial developments,” said Governor Bredesen. “These improvements will help keep pedestrians safe and encourage more residents to walk to their destinations. I’m pleased we could make this investment in Maury County.”
“Through the Transportation Enhancement Grant Program, TDOT has helped fund approximately $205 million in transportation related projects,” said Nicely. “The program was established by Congress in the early 1990’s to fund activities designed to strengthen the cultural, aesthetic and environmental aspects of the nation’s transportation system.”
A variety of activities such as the restoration of historic facilities, bike and pedestrian trails, landscaping and other non-traditional transportation projects are eligible for grant funds under the federal program.
